Participants - Level 1 Course in Yemen
The ITF Coaching Beginner & Intermediate Players course, hosted by the Yemen Tennis Federation in collaboration with the Yemen National Olympic Committee, was held in Sana’a, Yemen from 8th to 19th December 2012. The 12-day course was conducted by ITF Tutors, Ali Choqri from Morocco and Feras Dhabos from Syria.
There were a total of 19 participants from Yemen and Tunisia including two girls, one from each country. The participants were all very interested and dedicated. Wiem from Tunisia and Fahd from Yemen thanked the ITF Tutors for the quality of the course and their devotion.
Many topics were developed for Beginner and Intermediate Players including Play and Stay during the 3 first days, Communication skills, Fundamentals of Technique and Tactic, Elements of Group and Individual Lessons, Biomechanics and movement, Sports Medecine and First Aid, Psychology, Physical Conditioning, Rules of Tennis, Organisation of Tournaments, Skill acquisition and expertise development, Coaching players with disabilities.
Several videos were projected presenting different schools (France, Germany, USA). Ahmed Saife from Yemen said: "I especially liked the sandwich approach." Wigdan from Yemen also added "Now that I have seen these videos, it is much easier for me to ensure quality lessons for my players."
The Yemen National Olympic Committee welcomed the participants at their centre with a conference room, restaurant and accommodation. The Yemen Tennis Federation hosted the on-court sessions at their centre with 5 hard courts.
The Yemen Tennis Federation and the Yemen National Olympic Committee warmly thanked the ITF and ITF Tutors for their efforts and the quality of their interventions. Local newspapers published several articles about the course and the importance of the ITF support for tennis in Yemen and the region. The hosting nation organised a festive event for the diploma ceremony and gave souvenirs to the ITF Tutors.
For better development of tennis in Yemen, the Yemenite Tennis Federation and NOC need to organise more ITF courses (the previous one was held in 2009). There are some very good players under 14 who trained under supervision of ITF coaches from Yemen. The players must participate in intensive training programmes and tournaments with the support of the ITF in Yemen and abroad.
There are no female coaches in Yemen. One girl participated in the Level 1 course, but failed because she lacks experience since she is only 15 years old. The ITF Tutors advised the Yemenite Tennis Federation to further develop women’s tennis in Yemen.
We would like to thank the Yemen Tennis Federation and Yemen NOC for their warm welcome and kind help
